Stenciling is so much fun! For my first card in February, I used the Butterflies & Flowers Layering Decorative Masks. That’s a mouthful! But, it’s a great product, and the one I chose to be my Host Code Gift for the month of February. You can see the details below.

Masked Butterfly
I began by attaching the floral patterned mask to the “open” butterfly mask, with Painters Tape, on top of Basic White Cardstock, 4″ X 4″. Then, using Sponge Daubers, I colored the butterfly with three colors of ink: Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, and Mango Melody. I took precaution by putting tape over the mask designs, close to my butterfly, that I didn’t want to daub on.
Next, I stamped “Happy Birthday” from the Special Moments Stamp Set, one of the FREE Sale-a-bration items with a qualifying purchase. You can see all 21 sentiments in my Product List. Because I wanted to make sure the sentiment stamped perfectly, I used the Stamparatus.

To make the bright colors in the butterfly pop, I added a black and white border, using Pattern Party Designer Paper, 4 1/8″ X 4 1/8″. The layers were glued together on a Thick Basic White card base, 4 1/4″ X 4 1/4″. I made a square card a few days ago, and thought this was a good shape for the butterfly.
This 4 1/4″ X 4 1/4″ square card fits in our Medium Envelopes, even though there’s some room left over. While I was thinking about it, I decorated the flap of an envelope with Flowering Fields Designer Paper. It was easy to cut a 5 3/4″ X 2 3/8″ piece of designer paper, glue it to the envelope flap, and trim the excess, using the flap as a template. You can see the envelope in the first photo.

I was inspired by the Paper Players. Can you see I played the bottom row across?

Create textured and colored backgrounds with Butterflies & Flowers Layering Decorative Masks. These stencils are an easy way to blend colors on your cards and other paper crafting projects. You can use the background masks on their own. But your images will really pop when you layer the detailed masks over the backgrounds to get even more depth and dimension. Use with Classic Stampin’ Ink and coloring tools such as Blending Brushes and Sponge Daubers for beautiful color. You can also use them with Embossing Paste and Palette Knives for textured designs.

Your stenciled butterfly is beautiful…and SO perfect for our challenge this week, Su. I really like the black and white “frame”. Thank you for playing with The Paper Players!
Thank you, Ann! I’m so glad you like it!
So pretty Su – I love the effect of the over-stencilling on your butterfly. The black and white check border is really effective in framing your simple design too. Thanks for playing TicTacToe with us over at The Paper Players this week!
Thank you, Joanne! It’s always fun playing Tic Tac Toe.
Hi Sue, loved your card so much I cased it today. I have a question how did you avoid the bottom part of the butterfly body in the open butterfly stencil. That part was in the way when I blended my colors. Thanks in advance for any info.
I’m happy to inspire you. Thank you, Johanna! If I understand your question, I put tape over anything I didn’t want to color.
